Washington, DC — The HBO documentary MANHUNT — which tells the real-life story of the CIA operatives behind the hunt for Osama bin Laden — is showing at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival this week. The film is based on award-winning journalist and New America National Security Studies Program Director Peter Bergen’s book, MANHUNT: The Ten-Year Search for Bin Laden–from 9/11 to Abbottabad.
The film, premiering on HBO in May, portrays a remarkable team of CIA analysts, mostly women, who warned officials in Washington about a terrorist organization called Al Qaeda, and post-9/11, worked tirelessly to hunt bin Laden down.
With audiences now familiar with the general backdrop of the events and operational procedures through fictionalized films such as “Zero Dark Thirty,” MANHUNT is a real-life spy thriller that reveals behind-the-scenes accounts from the analysts, targeters and operatives. The film is directed by Greg Barker.
Peter Bergen is the author of three previous books about Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda, two of which were New York Times bestsellers. His book, MANHUNT, is based on exhaustive research and unprecedented access to White House officials, CIA analysts, Pakistani intelligence, and the military.
“”It’s a tribute to the skill and smarts of director Greg Barker and of his team that the film MANHUNT is in the Sundance 2013 competition,” Bergen said.
