Eight years after September 11 al Qaeda’s strength is unclear; the organization has active affiliates in the Arabian Peninsula, Africa, and the Middle East, but has suffered serious blows in recent years. It’s uncertain how much influence al Qaeda’s central leadership in Afghanistan and Pakistan actually has in worldwide conflict zones, and the extent to which its transnational jihad can impose itself on more localized conflicts. Please join us Monday, February 15 for a discussion with world-renowned al Qaeda expert Jean-Pierre Filiu, for the French view of the threat from al Qaeda and thoughts on collaboration between al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and the organization’s central branch.
