Summary
Screening with Q&A and Reception Homegrown: The Counter-Terror Dilemma The Los Angeles World Affairs Council, in partnership with HBO Documentary Films, will screen the Los Angeles premiere of Homegrown: The Counter-Terror Dilemma, which explores one of today’s most divisive and pressing issues – the threat posed by homegrown Islamic extremism in the US and the challenges in detecting and countering it. 96 of the 134 jihadist-inspired terrorists who have carried out or plotted attacks here since 2001 were U.S. citizens. Of the 38 who were not citizens, 19 were legal permanent residents. In other words, 86 percent radicalized while they were living here. The most recent and deadliest attack happened in our own backyard – in an armed assault by husband and wife extremists in San Bernardino that left 14 dead and 23 wounded. The film is the work of Greg Barker, who previously won an Emmy for producing HBO’s documentary Manhunt: The Inside Story of the Hunt for Bin Laden, screened by LAWAC in 2013. Barker delivers a gripping insider’s account from the perspectives of those who helped construct America’s counter-terrorism machine, as well as from the families of American Muslims who have become targets of counter-terrorist investigations. Q&A with Filmmaker Greg Barker and Executive Producer Peter Bergen, CNN’s National Security Analyst, will follow the screening. The discussion will be moderated by LAWAC President & CEO Terry McCarthy. Please join a reception afterwards at The Wine Bar at the Landmark Theatre. Homegrown will premiere on HBO on February 8th. |
