TALIBANISTAN: AMERICA’S DECADE OF WAR, Chicago Council, Chicago

TALIBANISTAN: AMERICA’S DECADE OF WAR

Peter Bergen, National Security Analyst, CNN; Director, National Security Studies Program, New America Foundation

After more than a decade of American involvement in Afghanistan, a successful peace settlement remains notoriously elusive. The scheduled conclusion of the NATO combat mission in 2014 though, has put the pressure on western governments to act fast. What will happen when more than 100,000 US and NATO troops withdraw from the country? After decades of war, what is the future of (in)stability in the region? Join The Chicago Council and Peter Bergen for a discussion on a post-2014 Afghanistan and Pakistan, and the central strategic challenges facing the US today.

Peter BergenPeter Bergen is CNN’s national security analyst, director of the National Security Studies Program at the New America Foundation, and a research fellow at New York University’s Center on Law and Security. He is a contributing editor at The New Republic, and has worked as a correspondent for National Geographic, Discovery, and CNN.com. In 2008, he was an adjunct lecturer at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and an adjunct professor at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. Bergen has reported for The New York Times, Foreign Affairs, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Wall Street Journal, TIME, and others. His books include Manhunt, The Longest War, and The Osama bin Laden I Know. Bergen holds an MA from Oxford University.

Bergen is the coeditor of Talibanistan: Negotiating the Borders Between Terror, Politics and Religion, and Manhunt: The Ten-Year Search for Bin Laden–from 9/11 to Abbottabad,  which will be available for purchase and signing following the program.
