Homegrown Terrorists: The Rise of Jihadism in the US

Peter Bergen, Vice President, New America; National Security Analyst, CNN

From the recent San Bernardino shootings to the devastating Boston Marathon bombings, homegrown jihadists have committed multiple deadly attacks since 9/11. Using popular American social media sites including Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook, terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda, al-Shabaab, and ISIS are successfully luring Americans into joining them overseas or inspiring domestic attacks. With over 300 Americans prosecuted on charges related to Islamist terrorism since 2001, and over 250 trying to join Jihadist terrorist groups in Syria, how can the US government security agencies clamp down on ‘internet jihadism’ and prevent homegrown terrorism? What motivates people like Anwar al-Awlaki and the Tsarnaev brothers to commit such crimes and embrace radical Islam?

Peter Bergen’s book United States of Jihad: Investigating America’s Homegrown Terrorists will be available for purchase and signing from The Book Cellar following the program.
