The theme of the National Conference is US National Security: Six Top Issues for the President in 2013. For the second year now, the World Affairs Councils of America’s council leadership has been voting on the Six Top National Security issues that the network leadership believes are the top issues that the network should debate and discuss in the upcoming year. The National Conference launches that network wide discussion, which this year includes: US Economic Competitiveness, US Education-Competing Globally, Middle East, China, Afghanistan/Pakistan, and US Energy Policy. The security challenges presented by nuclear weapons cross cut many of these issues, including US policy in the Middle East, China, Afghanistan/Pakistan and US Energy Policy.
This Plenary is intended to be a discussion of the current state of US-Pakistani relations, the complex problems that are having an impact on that relationship, and the implications of both success and failure in that relationship for stability in the region and beyond, particularly in the aftermath of US withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2014.
